5 Foods You Should Try in Greece

Greek salad and Feta Cheese

No matter the restaurant you are at in Greece, nine times out of 10 it will offer Greek salad on its menu. In Greece, it is characteristic of a Greek salad to be served without lettuce. Instead, it usually includes sliced tomatoes, red onion, olives, cucumbers and a block of feta cheese. The salad is dressed with olive oil and seasoned with salt and oregano. You can expect the feta cheese to be amazing. Feta cheese is very common in Greece, especially for breakfast when served with sliced salami or ham.

Gyros

Gyros are almost as common in restaurants as Greek salad. Gyros (pronounced YEE-rows) are staples in Greek cuisine. The most common meats in gyros are lamb and chicken. You can order a gyro to-go and wrapped up or served on a plate. Food establishments in Mykonos prepare their gyros in a very similar way, so ordering a gyro will always be a safe bet. Typically, along with the meat of your choice, a gyro will be served with tzatziki sauce, slices of red onion and tomato, pita bread and French fries, or “potatoes” as they call them in Greece.

Crepes

While walking around the Little Venice area in Mykonos, there are no shortage of crepe stands. Crepes are essentially very thin pancakes enclosing some sort of custard or dessert such as Greek yogurt, gelato, Nutella, fresh fruit or chocolate. Like gyros, you can also order crepes to-go and wrapped up or on a plate. However, they are a bit of a mess, so using a plate is quite helpful when indulging in this tasty treat.

Gelato

Gelato shops are very prominent in Greece. The shops usually have an array of flavors so there is something for everyone to try, including vegans. In comparison to ice cream, gelato is denser, served at a slightly warmer temperature and has a silkier and softer texture. I had gelato almost every night in Mykonos, it is definitely a must-do.
